One of the most asked questions from people who have toenail fungus is “How can I achieve healthy looking nails?” and “How do you maintain them?”.

When it comes to getting healthy looking nails and upkeep, there is a few rules and products you should use.  Luckily, a lot of the products are simple to use and rather cheap, so they won’t burn a hole in your pocket

1.  Trimming Your Nails Regularly

One of the most prominent aspects of keeping your nails healthy is cutting them regularly.  Not only is it important for personal hygiene but it also stimulates growth in the nail.  So, for the sufferers of toenail fungus it is important to cut your nails because it will boost the growth of your nails.  The boost in growth will allow you to get rid of the fungus faster.  It is not only important to trim your nails regularly but to also trim them correctly.  Here is a video with tips on trimming your nails properly

  • As stated in the video, trim your nails after you get out of the shower.
  • Also, be careful not to trim to close to the skin line or otherwise you are at risk for an ingrown toenail or infection.
  • Don’t push your cuticles back.
  • Additionally, if you are an athlete be sure to cut your nails regularly because the trauma from playing sports puts you at a higher risk of fungal infections
  • IMPORTANT – Be sure to clean any tools that you use when trimming your toenails with 70% isopropyl alcohol after use, to prevent them from storing bacterial or fungal infections.

2.  Moisturize Regularly

One of the often overlooked and ignored parts of maintaining healthy looking nails and feet is moisturizing.  There is nothing worse than seeing toes and nails that look dry, cracked and unhealthy.  Be sure to apply lotion to your feet regularly after a shower and at night before you go to bed.  I talk about an natural foot lotion that specializes in maintaining healthy looking feet in one of my blog articles.

3.  Try Tea Tree Oil

One of the best ways to maintain healthy toes is to apply tea tree oil to them directly or have a foot wash that has tea tree oil within it.  I personally can vouch for tea tree oil with my own results against toenail fungus.  Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties which allow aid in getting rid of toe fungus and keeping healthy nails.

4.  Keep your Feet Dry

One of the best ways to help with the upkeep up your nails is to keep them dry.  When you let them remain in a damp and humid environment, it becomes a breeding ground for fungus.  You can avoid this by buying foot powder or changing your socks daily.

5.  Avoid Nail Polish

Huh?  Avoid nail polish?  That is how I cover up my ugly nails!  Well, actually nail polish is terrible if you have unhealthy nails because it creates a dark and moist environment which can become a breeding ground for bacteria.  It is similar to covering the vents that allow air conditioning into your house.  Soon inside the house will become hot and humid.

6.  Drink Plenty of Water

This is one of the simplest methods of keeping healthy nails.  When your body is fully hydrated, it can perform it’s best and tackle infections and maintain those healthy nails!

7.  Take Supplements

If you are not getting enough Biotin in your diet, which promotes nail, hair and skin growth, then I really recommend this vitamin.  I personally take Biotin supplements and have seen my nails grow faster and healthier, along with benefits with my skin and hair.  If you are interested in Biotin, then check it out.  I have found that there is better resources online than in stores.
