Do you have yellow or white toenails? So did I! (See below)
When I looked down at my feet a year ago my nails were discolored white and yellow. They were also brittle, crumbly and thick. The bottoms of my feet were so thick and rough it was like a serpent’s skin. I honestly did not know where to go or what to do… I was so embarrassed.
I didn’t want to go to my parents or friends. Even thinking about going to the doctor gave me anxiety.
So, probably like you, I went to the Internet to search for the quickest way to get rid of toenail fungus and athlete’s foot for good.
Unfortunately, going to the Internet had a lot of B.S. and cost me a lot of time and money. I even went to the doctors where I did not receive enough of my prescription to fully treat my toe fungus and they refused to refill it which only resulted in the fungus coming back stronger than ever.
Thus, the creation of this website.

White and Yellow Nails Hurt-Physically and Emotionally.
There is multiple types of pain surrounded having toenail fungus. Physical and emotional pain are both prominent when a nail fungal infection is present.
The nail can break down and split causing an a lot of pain and discomfort, especially when wearing shoes.
The fungus on the nails can also spread to the skin causing it to crack and dry out which can also be uncomfortable.
On the left is a photo of my own feet about a year ago. The pain would increase during summer when my feet would crack and sweat.
Toenail Fungus Can Cause Emotional Pain
Then the other type of pain that a fungus can cause is the emotional side.
I recently moved to a place near the beach and having to turn down invites to hangout with my friends to hang out at the beach or pool is miserable.
Being self-conscious and embarrassed of your toes is not something a normal person should have to go through.
How can you enjoy going to a pool party and meeting beautiful girls and handsome guys if you’re constantly trying to hid your feet?
Toe fungus definitely affects self-confidence in social settings and even in the bedroom!
I know that anytime I am getting intimate that I ALWAYS leave my socks on, no matter what. It’s not really sexy to always have socks on.
If you’re nails are discolored yellow or white then it is your time to take action today! The sooner you begin treating your nails with Tolnaftate cream and tea tree oil, the sooner you can get the nail you always wanted.
If left untreated, fungus can thicken the nails to the point of no return.
The point at which you must go to a doctor and have extreme procedures done to correct your nails. Letting your toenails get to this point will cost you a tremendous amount of time and money.
What is causing my yellow nails?
The cause of your discolored nails can be due to various reasons. One of the biggest reasons people get nail fungus is through exposure since toe fungus is contagious.
Humidity from pools, spas and showers.
Exposure can happen from entering into hot and humid public places such as pools, spas and showers. It is important to protect yourself from coming into contact with fungus by wearing flip flops in areas like this.
Another reason people get fungus is from previously having athlete’s feet. This is how I got toenail fungus.
Letting athlete’s foot run rampant on your will likely spread to your toes and then keep exponentially spreading. Treat foot fungus right away to prohibit it from moving from the skin to your toes.
Poorly ventilated shoes
Poorly ventilated shoes is another factor to a nail fungal infection. This is due to the fact that the poor circulation creates humidity inside the shoe.
The perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to grow and thrive. To prevent this, invest in ventilated shoes and foot powder to keep your feet dry.
Other Causes of White Toenails
Liver disease and failure. Some common symptoms attributed to liver disease is…
- Nausea or vomiting?
- Abdominal pain?
- Jaundice? (yellow skin or eyes?)
- If you have these symptoms, then speak to a doctor urgently.
Chronic liver disease is a lot less common cause of white toenails compared to fungus. Additionally, white toenails are one of the later symptoms of liver disease. You will likely experience the aforementioned symptoms before seeing discolored nails. If you’re experiencing white toenails but none of the other symptoms then you can most likely discount liver disease. But if you have the previous symptoms mentioned then see a doctor immediately.
Treatment for white nails caused by liver damage
We seriously recommend to see your doctor as soon as possible for a check up. This is a serious medical condition that should not be taken lightly. Your nail’s discoloration from liver damage will require professional medical assistance to return your health and nails to normal.
Discoloration from Injury
Your nail may become discolored from a physical injury. If your white spots on your nail is from an injury then the only thing you can do is wait and let the nail grow out. You can take nail supplements such as Biotin to speed up the process.
If you play sports that require a lot of start and stop movements such as basketball, it is essential that you cut your nails properly. Ensure your nails are cut straight and short.
Additionally, in order to avoid nail injuries, make sure you have the proper footwear. Your shoes should not be too loose or too tight.
There should not be more than a half inch gap in between the wall of your shoe and your toe. If you work a manual labor/blue collared job such as construction, steel-toe boots can help prevent injury.
Also, nail fungus can develop from the trauma of an injury.
This happens when an injury weakens or exposes the deeper parts of the nail, permitting fungus to get in deeper than normal. If you do acquire a nail fungal infection from an injury, pick up a nail gel such as Probelle.
Treatment Options for Fungus?
When it comes to treatment types for toenail fungus there is a variety to choose from. Choosing the right one may be difficult but hopefully after this article you will be able to choose the right one curated for you.
Usually treatment options fall into these broad categories.
A prescription medication requires that you go to your doctor or podiatrist and get them to write you a prescription for your toenail fungus.
They will most likely write a prescription of Sporanax which has had success in treating peoples fungi. However, there are some risks, lifestyle changes, and precautions involved.
Below is the pros and cons of this type of treatment option.
- Proven Effectiveness but still not 100%
- Very harsh on the liver
- Cannot drink alcohol
- Long treatment time
- Tests done before, during and after treatment.
Laser treatment is another alternative for people with severe cases of fungus on their toes.
This is a newer technology that has emerged recently which is still getting the kinks worked out of.
A registered technician will blast your toes with laser basically melting away the fungus. This typically will be a process and require a few sessions and is not a silver bullet.
- Treatment time is not as long
- Takes multiple sessions
- Sometimes painful or discomforting
Home remedies are very popular for less severe cases of fungal infections and are often cost effective.
Some of the home remedies can include using bleach, Vick’s vapor rub, apple cider vinegar, and other items around the house.
However, note that these do not always work especially with more intense and widespread fungus infections.
Most home remedies are cheap to use and better for smaller fungal infections.
- Cost Effective
- Everyday household items
- Typically only works for mild and early stages of toenail fungus.
- Not always effective
Natural treatments encompass a large range of products typically using tea tree oil, manuka oil, and other anti-fungal essential oils.
These are typically effective even with more moderate and severe cases of athlete’s foot and toe fungus.
I have tried and tested many different products to treat my own toe fungus and came up with a solid list of natural products.
Another type of natural products that is used with great effectiveness is essential oils. Essential oils are great at penetrating thick toenails and getting rid of the fungus underneath.
- Natural ingredients – no side effects
- Very effective
- Cost Effective
- Can take time to see results
Similar to a natural approach, a holistic approach is a two-pronged attack which treats the candida in your body causing toe fungus and also treats the external symptoms present in the nails.
A holistic approach entails the use of a healthy diet, eliminating conventional grain products and sugars, utilizing natural products, and supplementation.
One of the reasons a holistic approach is a great option for people is if they have tried conventional treatments with no success. What this means that it is possible that treatments that were tried cured the symptoms but not the underlying cause. This approach will attack the root cause of your toe fungus.
It is great if you feel like you have tried everything and this could be the small detail that you are missing to curing your fungus for good.
- Helps your overall body heal
- Promotes a healthier lifestyle
- Can prevent nail fungus from reoccurring
- Could take time to see results
- Requires commitment

OTC creams are great for your wallet and killing fungus. I found the best priced OTC creams to be available online.
I used to buy mine from the local drugstore and now have switched elsewhere due to the higher prices they charge in store.
OTC creams are also easy-to-use and can treat an assortment of fungal infections.
I composed a list of OTC creams that have helped me treat my own fungus.
- No real side effects
- Cost Effective
- Often uses natural ingredients
- Requires regular and consistent application
My Personal History with Toenail Fungus
I remember being younger and having normal feet. Being a boy, my hygiene probably wasn’t the best but I took care of myself. One day when I was 14, I noticed my feet were extremely itchy. I had no idea as to why but itching them brought so much relief.
The itching began after I had started playing football for my high school. This itching sensation was actually athlete’s foot but being young and dumb, I had no idea. There was no real irritation so I didn’t bother treating it.
Flash forward a few years later and my skin had begun peeling in between my toes and it looked basically like my feet were rotting. The fungus spread in between all my toes and on the soles and side of my feet. The fungus quickly overwhelmed my toes and discolored them.
Again, this did not cause any real pain for me so I withheld from treating my toes and feet. I was pretty antisocial and shy throughout my high school career so going to the pool with friends wasn’t something I worried to much about.
My nail fungal infection just progressively became worse and then I moved close to the beach for college. I also had a girlfriend and we would often go to the pool or beach. This created so much anxiety inside of me because I was embarrassed about my toes.
After moving to college, I became much more social and taking control of my life. I knew I had to treat my fungus now. I tried in the past in high school but I was scared to tell my parents about my issue so I would just use at-home treatments which wasn’t very effective for the severity of my infection.
I did end up going to a doctor but all he did was prescribe clortizamole cream which was effective but I did not receive enough tubes of the cream to completely get rid of my fungi for good. The fungus ended up coming back stronger than ever after I ended treatment.
They were cost effective, easy to use, and healed my toes quickly. I wrote an entire article about the products I used to cure a fungal infection of the toenail.
Why to treat your fungus now?
Unfortunately, unlike other ailments that we may encounter in our lives such as a cold, nail fungus does not go away on it’s own. A fungal infection will get worse before it ever gets better, unless you start treating it now.
I would also recommend checking out one of the best treatments for nail fungus that I have found.
In the article, I discuss several of the most effective treatments as well as the most cost efficient. It also goes in-depth on how to protect yourself and prevent fungus from coming back.
